Chawinga Sisters Fire Malawi Into Historic WAFCON Final Against Cameroon

Malawi’s remarkable Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign has reached another historic milestone after the tournament debutants defeated Algeria to book a place in the final against Cameroon.

Ranked 153rd in the world and appearing at WAFCON for the first time, Malawi continued their unexpected run with captain Tabitha Chawinga and her sister Temwa Chawinga playing decisive roles in the semi-final victory.

The match shifted in Malawi’s favour midway through the first half when Algeria’s Morgane Belkhiter was shown a red card for a foul on the last defender.

Malawi capitalised on the numerical advantage in the 33rd minute when Tabitha Chawinga produced an overhead kick following a corner to open the scoring.

Temwa Chawinga then doubled Malawi’s advantage one minute into first-half added time, rounding goalkeeper Chloe N'Gazi before finding the net.

However, Malawi also went down to 10 players shortly before the interval when Rose Kadzere was dismissed for a studs-up challenge.

Algeria responded after the break, with Ikram Adjabi reducing the deficit in the 60th minute to give her side hope of a comeback.

Tabitha Chawinga ended that threat in the 76th minute, scoring her second goal of the match with an individual effort to restore Malawi’s two-goal advantage.

The result sends Malawi into Sunday’s WAFCON final, where they will meet Cameroon.

The Indomitable Lionesses secured their place in the final after overcoming tournament hosts Morocco 3-1 on penalties. The two teams had remained goalless through regulation time and extra time.

Temwa Chawinga, who is based in Kansas City, has now scored five goals in the tournament and is joint top scorer. Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for French club Lyon, has contributed four goals.

Algeria will now face Morocco in Saturday’s third-place play-off.

Sunday’s final between Malawi and Cameroon will also carry a major financial reward, with a record $2 million first prize at stake, according to information contained in the supplied tournament report.

Malawi, Cameroon, Algeria and Morocco have also secured qualification for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the WAFCON semi-finals.

For Malawi, the final represents another extraordinary achievement in a debut tournament that has already seen the underdogs rise from first-time qualifiers to contenders for the continental title.
