Ofori Amponsah Recalls Early Rejections From Accra Music Producers

Ghanaian highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has opened up about the challenges he faced at the beginning of his music journey, revealing that several producers in Accra initially rejected his songs because they were not convinced he could achieve commercial success.

Speaking in an interview with Kafui Dey, the musician said he travelled to Accra in search of producers willing to support his talent, but repeatedly encountered doubts about the potential of his music.

According to Ofori Amponsah, convincing industry players to listen to and invest in his songs was difficult during the period when he was still trying to establish himself.

“I came to Accra searching for producers, but they did not believe my songs could work,” he said during the interview.

Ofori Amponsah explained that his determination to pursue music began while he was still in secondary school.

He said he started looking for opportunities around Form Four and intensified his search when he reached Form Five.

Armed with cassette recordings of his songs, he would move from place to place after school in the hope of meeting someone prepared to listen to his work and give him an opportunity.

“I started around Form Four. Nobody was willing to help. I was in Form Five, and after school, I picked up my cassette and went around to search,” he recalled.

Despite the repeated rejection and lack of support, Ofori Amponsah said he remained committed to pursuing a career in music rather than abandoning his ambition.

His persistence eventually helped him move beyond those early difficulties and build the music career he had been working towards.

Ofori Amponsah later became a recognised name in Ghanaian highlife music, recording songs that established his presence in the genre.

His account highlights the setbacks he experienced before gaining the opportunity and support needed to advance his career in Ghana’s music industry.
