Mr Atta Akyea has indicated that preparations are underway to appeal the 20-year prison sentence handed to Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. Speaking about the planned legal action, Mr Atta Akyea said the legal team had already prepared the proposed grounds of appeal.
The lawyers are currently reviewing the grounds before formally filing the notice of appeal. According to him, the appeal process will begin immediately after the lawyers complete their assessment and reach an agreement on the final grounds to be presented.
Mr Atta Akyea also welcomed reports that the New Patriotic Party’s legal team intends to join him in pursuing the appeal. He described the expected collaboration as beneficial to the case. Chairman Wontumi was sentenced by the High Court in Accra on Monday to 20 years’ imprisonment over his role in the Akonta Mining illegal mining case.
The planned appeal is expected to challenge the ruling after the legal team completes its review and formally begins the court process.
