Six Detained After New-Winneba Violence Leaves Three Dead
Six men have been taken into police custody following violent clashes at New-Winneba in the Central Region that left three people dead and several others injured on Tuesday.
The Central Regional Police Command said the suspects are Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22.
According to a statement issued by the police on Wednesday, the arrests form part of investigations into the violence that broke out in parts of New-Winneba.
Three Die Following Clashes
During the confrontations, clubs, machetes and stones were allegedly used, leaving several people injured and causing panic among residents.
Emergency responders, with assistance from residents, transported the injured to health facilities in Winneba for medical attention.
Three of the victims later died from their injuries, while others remained on admission for treatment.
Police said a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge were recovered from the scene.
Police Increase Security Presence
Following the incident, the Central Regional Police Command deployed additional personnel to New-Winneba as part of efforts to restore calm and strengthen security.
Six snap checkpoints have been established, while police patrols have been intensified during both daytime and nighttime across the affected areas.
Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate and the Criminal Investigation Department have also been deployed to monitor developments and assist with the ongoing investigation.
Investigators are working to establish what caused the clashes, whether the attacks were coordinated and the identities of all other persons who may have been involved.
Residents Asked to Assist Investigators
The Police Command has appealed to residents, traditional authorities and community leaders to cooperate with investigators and provide relevant information that could help identify other people connected to the violence.
The six arrested suspects are currently being held at the Cape Coast Divisional Police Headquarters while investigations continue.
Police said calm has returned to New-Winneba and described the situation as being under control.
