The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II, describing his death as a great loss to the nation and Ghana’s traditional leadership.
In a statement signed by the Minister, Ahmed Ibrahim, the Ministry extended its deepest condolences to the Regent, chiefs and elders of the Dagbon Traditional Area, the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, and all Ghanaians mourning the revered traditional ruler.
The Ministry noted that, as the institution responsible for chieftaincy, traditional governance and the preservation of Ghana’s cultural heritage, it deeply appreciated the late Ya-Na’s immense contribution to peacebuilding, national unity, cultural preservation and the socio-economic development of the Dagbon Kingdom and the country at large.
According to the statement, Ya-Na Abukari II will be remembered for the significant role he played in bringing lasting peace to Dagbon and for ascending the throne as a symbol of reconciliation, wisdom and service. It said his reign embodied the values of dignity, selfless leadership and commitment to the welfare of his people.
The Ministry described his passing as a national loss, emphasizing that his legacy of leadership, reconciliation and dedication to peace would continue to inspire future generations.
It further assured the bereaved family and the people of Dagbon of the Ministry’s solidarity during the period of mourning and prayed for strength, comfort and divine guidance as preparations are made to give the late Overlord a befitting farewell.
The Ministry concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the soul of Ya-Na Abukari II.
Meanwhile, the Yendi Municipal Directorate, in consultation with the Northern Regional Directorate, the Dagbon Traditional Council, the royal family and the Gbawaa Palace, in line with Dagbon custom, has announced the temporary closure of all schools within the Yendi Municipality, the seat of Dagbon Kingdom, following the passing of the Overlord.
