The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has raised concerns about revenue losses from illegal lottery operations in Ghana, estimating that the country loses more than GH¢1 billion annually.
The Authority said unlicensed number games, unauthorised sports betting shops and informal gaming schemes continue to operate outside regulatory oversight, depriving the state of significant revenue.
It noted that legal lottery operations contribute to national development projects in sectors such as sports, education and health, adding that funds lost to illegal operators undermine public benefits.
The NLA also warned that illegal lottery activities expose players to fraud, offer no consumer protection and may facilitate money laundering.

According to the Authority, it is working with security agencies to intensify enforcement, including raids and arrests of illegal operators, while calling for stronger penalties and improved regulation.
The NLA urged the public to patronise only licensed operators and report illegal lottery activities to the appropriate authorities.
