A 19-year-old man has died after allegedly being attacked by residents at Mpasatia in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region over claims that he attempted to steal a motorised tricycle, popularly known as an aboboyaa.
The deceased, whose identity has not yet been established, was reportedly with two other suspects who were allegedly involved in the theft of the tricycle in the community.
Speaking to Adom News, Mpasatia Assembly Member Karim Salifu said the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
According to him, the owner of the tricycle raised an alarm after spotting individuals allegedly attempting to make away with the vehicle.
“The deceased was with two other suspects who had come to steal an aboboyaa in the area. The owner raised an alarm for help after spotting the thieves. While they were fleeing with the tricycle, one of them fell and was attacked by community members who were chasing them,” Mr Salifu stated.
He said he arrived at the scene at about 6:30 a.m. and found the young man still alive but critically injured.
Mr Salifu indicated that the victim died a few minutes later.
The incident was subsequently reported to the Mpasatia Police Command, which transported the body to the morgue of Frimpong Boateng Hospital for preservation and a post-mortem examination.
Police have since commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Mr Salifu disclosed that no arrests had been made in connection with the alleged mob action as of the time of filing this report.
Mob justice remains a recurring concern in several parts of Ghana, with security agencies repeatedly urging the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities rather than taking the law into their own hands.
Police are expected to continue investigations into both the alleged theft and the circumstances leading to the young man’s death.
