Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan is set to take on a new role with the Ghana Football Association after being named Ambassador for the national teams and Colts football.
The GFA will officially unveil the country’s all-time leading scorer during a special ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Pelican Hotel in Accra.
The event, which is expected to attract top football officials, former teammates, corporate partners and members of the media, forms part of efforts to rally national support ahead of Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Gyan remains one of the most iconic figures in Ghanaian football history, having scored 51 goals for the Black Stars during an illustrious international career spanning over a decade.
The former Sunderland striker represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014, and famously scored the nation’s first-ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic in Germany.
Despite the heartbreak of his dramatic penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup, Gyan’s influence and commitment to the Black Stars have continued to resonate strongly with supporters across the country and beyond.
In his new ambassadorial role, Gyan is expected to spearhead promotional campaigns, fan engagement activities and corporate partnerships aimed at boosting enthusiasm around the Black Stars before the Mundial.
He will also represent the GFA at official functions while supporting the development and promotion of Ghana’s national teams and Colts football structure.
The appointment underscores the GFA’s desire to leverage Gyan’s popularity, experience and leadership qualities as Ghana prepares for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
