The Ministry of Health, Ghana, has announced the launch of the Free Primary Healthcare programme by President John Dramani Mahama.
The initiative marks a shift from treatment-focused care to prevention and community-based healthcare, with free access to essential services at CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics.
President Mahama said the programme will enable routine screening for conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes to support early detection and management.
He added that the initiative will complement the National Health Insurance Scheme by ensuring referrals for advanced treatment at higher-level facilities.
The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, said trained health workers and volunteers will be deployed to communities, markets, schools, and workplaces to conduct screenings and intensify public health education.
The programme will begin in 150 underserved districts and is expected to expand nationwide by 2028.
