J.J. Rawlings Foundation mourns the passing of Sgt. Peter Tasiri

The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Sgt. Peter Tasiri Azongo, who died on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

In a statement, signed by Kobina Andoh Amoakwa of the Communications Directorate, the Foundation described Sgt. Tasiri as one of the dedicated non-commissioned officers whose relentless efforts contributed to the historic June 4, 1979 uprising, an event driven by severe economic hardship and widespread corruption that had gripped the nation at the time.

A native of the Kusaug Traditional Area in Ghana’s Upper East Region, Sgt. Tasiri and his colleagues played a crucial role in securing the release of former Head of State Jerry John Rawlings from detention following his arrest during the May 15, 1979 insurrection.

The Foundation extended its condolences to the bereaved family and called on well-meaning Ghanaians to join in mourning the late soldier, whose sacrifices it said helped lay the groundwork for Ghana’s socio-political transformation.

“Sgt. Tasiri, rest well. Your sacrifices helped to lay the foundation for the socio-political transformation that Ghana enjoys today. We will endeavour to keep the light you all lit burning and carve your memories in stone,” the statement concluded.
