Five killed, 12 injured in Wakrom accident on Cape Coast–Accra Highway


, Sept. 17 (GNA) – Five people have died and 12 others sustained injuries in a fatal road crash at Wakrom, near Yamoransa, on the Cape Coast– Highway on Monday afternoon.

The occurred when a DAF truck, with registration number AW 9548-13 and loaded with 700 bags of rice, collided with an Accra-bound Toyota Hiace passenger vehicle, registered GC 9728-21.

Bystanders managed to rescue 12 victims before the arrival of the (GNFS). They were rushed to the Biriwa Polyclinic, where one was later confirmed dead.

DOII Abdul Wasiu Hudu, Central Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, told the News Agency (GNA) that the rescue team got to the scene at 14:59 hours and extricated five more victims from the mangled vehicle. Four of them were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, while one critically injured person remains under treatment.

The driver and mate of the DAF truck escaped unhurt. The accident caused heavy traffic on the busy highway as emergency services worked to save lives and clear the wreckage.
