The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that government has released over GH¢6 billion to clear arrears and strengthen funding for flagship education programmes.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the GES, Daniel Fenyi, GH¢1 billion has been paid into the Free Senior High School programme, GH¢2.9 billion to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), and GH¢895 million to the School Feeding Programme, with allocations per child also increased.
Additionally, all outstanding GH¢72.8 million Capitation Grant arrears have been cleared, while GH¢122.8 million has been paid to cover BECE registration.
The Service described the interventions as “a deliberate step to secure sustainable funding for education and ease the financial burden on parents and schools.”
Verifiable Allocations Underpinning the GHS 6 Billion Total
Reviewing the 2025 Budget Statement reveals the following key education-related allocations:
GHS 3.5 billion for the Free Secondary Education Programme
GHS 564.6 million for comprehensive provision of free curricula-based textbooks
GHS 1.788 billion for the School Feeding Programme
GHS 145.5 million as Capitation Grant to schools
GHS 292.4 million allocated for distribution of free sanitary pads to female students
GHS 499.8 million under the “No-Academic-Fee” policy for first-year students in public tertiary institutions
Even excluding less central items (like tertiary coverage), core interventions total well over GHS 5 billion, making that “over GHS 6 billion” figure credible as a rounded or cumulative estimate.
