Cape Coast, Ghana – 19 September 2025 – The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to step aside as he has exceeded the compulsory retirement age of 60.
Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto has been appointed as acting Vice-Chancellor to lead the university in the interim.
GTEC cited Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution and the UCC Statutes (2016), which mandate retirement at 60, explaining that the office is a public position requiring adherence to statutory retirement rules.
The UCC Governing Council has also been directed to stay the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor until a High Court ruling resolves a related legal case.
