Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo praised his players’ commitment and quality after they secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana national football team.
An early strike from Jhon Arias proved decisive as Colombia booked a meeting with Switzerland national football team in the knockout stage.
Speaking after the match, Lorenzo admitted Ghana made life difficult for his side despite Colombia creating enough opportunities to win by a bigger margin.
“The logistics are tough for everyone. The lads played a great game. At times they pushed us back. They were a tough opponent, they made things difficult for us, but we had chances to finish the game off,” the Colombian coach said.
Colombia made the perfect start by taking the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour through Arias after forward Jhon Cordoba was forced off injured early in the contest.
His replacement, Luis Javier Suarez, made an immediate impact in the attacking move that led to the breakthrough.
Ghana threatened in the opening minutes when Thomas Partey fired narrowly wide after a defensive error, but the Black Stars struggled to seriously test Colombia’s disciplined backline for the remainder of the encounter.
Lorenzo also expressed confidence that star winger Luis Diaz will soon return to the scoresheet despite drawing another blank.
“Luis Diaz lives for goals, and that’s normal. He’ll find the net again and score. We owe the fans many more moments of joy,” he added.
The victory continues Colombia’s impressive defensive record at the tournament, with Lorenzo’s side conceding just one goal in four matches while advancing to the knockout rounds.
Colombia will now turn their attention to a Round of 16 showdown against Switzerland on July 7 in Vancouver as they bid to continue their World Cup campaign.
